Tajweed

Correct recitation: articulation points, qualities of the letters and the rules of recitation, with guided practice.

Who it is for

Older children, teenagers and adults aged 9 and over who can already read the Quran from the mushaf and want to recite it correctly. If you are not sure about your level, the free trial class will place you.

Two levels

  • TJ1 Beginner (about 24 weeks): what tajweed is, the articulation points of every letter, heavy and light letters, the rules of noon sakinah and tanween, meem sakinah, ghunnah, qalqalah, the main lengths of madd, and stopping at the end of a verse. Goal: recite Juz Amma with fewer than 3 rule errors per page.
  • TJ2 Intermediate (about 24 to 30 weeks): the qualities of the letters, the rules of raa, idgham, hamzat al-wasl, all types of madd, where to stop and start for meaning, and the special words in the narration of Hafs. Teenagers and adults can add an optional weekly theory group.

Recitation follows the narration of Hafs from Asim, the narration used in Afghanistan.

A typical lesson

About a third of each lesson explains one rule with examples, and the rest is the learner reciting while the teacher listens and corrects. Lessons are 30 minutes for children and 45 minutes for adults, two or three times a week.

Homework and progress

Each week the learner practises a short passage and, where the family agrees, sends a short voice recording through the academy platform (never to a teacher's personal phone). A different teacher conducts the end-of-level check wherever possible, so results are fair.

Our teachers

Tajweed teachers recite correctly in the narration of Hafs, have studied tajweed formally with a named teacher or institute, and pass the Evaz recitation and theory test before they teach.
